Poetry for Children

Summer

The summer grass
    plays with my toes.
The summer breeze
    tickles my nose.
The bumble bee
    plays on a rose.
The water squirts
    out of the hose.
I only wear
    my undies for clothes.
Do you think
    this is why
    everything grows
    better in summer?

Teatime

We wrestle and have fun.
We shout and scream and squeal.

Then we dress up all prim and proper,
Cause now it's time for tea.

Giggling

Sometimes I giggle.
Do you giggle too?
Sometimes I giggle
    the whole day through.
When it's time to stop,
I know it's time for bed.
And sometimes even then,
I giggle when prayers are said.
Then God knows I'm happy,
    instead of being sad.

Stars

I close my eyes.

I see the stars
    all twinkling in my head.
Then, I turn out their lights
    and fall asleep
    upon my little bed.

Daddy's
     Muscles

Daddy's muscles
    stand up tall,
Like tin soldiers
    big and proud.

He hugs me tight.
They feel so strong.
Oh no, no, no.
I could never be wrong
    about who's holding me.

My
   Mommy's
         Hands

My mommy's hands
    smell nice and fresh
    after dishes are done.

My mommy's hands
    feel nice and smooth
    when she puts cream on.

When mommy's hands
    pick me up
    to say goodnight to me.
I touch them gently.
Does she know
    what they mean to me?

"My Ball" by Sharon Terry

My ball rolls
                  into corners
                        because it's
               nice and round.

      No matter
                  how I toss it
                        it's never
               upside down.

My Shoes

When I have new shoes,

Everyone says,
    "Look at those new shoes."

They make a fuss,
    and I am proud,

Even though I like
    my old shoes best.

The Clock

The clock that
    hangs upon our wall
    is silent as a mouse.

The books all say
    it ticks and tocks,
    but not the clock
    that's in my house.
My Pillow

My pillow is
    Fluffy and
        Bumpy and
            Smooth!

It's all of these things,
    but it can't move.

It sits on my bed
    just waiting for night,
    when I pick it up
    and hold it tight.

I Dressed Myself

I dressed myself
    today,
    with colors bright and cheery.

I just don't understand
    why mommy said,
    "Oh, deary."
